KIMBERLY-CLARK SOFTEX HAS ACHIEVED SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION FROM THE PLANET MARK FOR THE 4TH TIME

Jakarta, 4 March 2021 - Kimberly-Clark Softex (PT. Softex Indonesia) has achieved the 2020 Planet Mark^TM Certification, an internationally-recognized and trusted sustainability certification, for its efforts in sustainability and carbon footprint reduction. This certification recognizes Kimberly-Clark Softex’s commitment and continuous improvement in sustainability and carbon footprint reduction.

This achievement proves our positive approaches towards sustainable development and resource-efficient business practices. We have been implementing this energy-saving process throughout our operations to deliver better products at lower cost for consumers and the environment. This certification was given as the result of Kimberly-Clark Softex’s business carbon footprint reporting in 2019.  The footprint includes emissions from electricity, refrigerant, lubricant, fuel, water, material and waste for 3 manufacturing facilities: Plant Tangerang, Sidoarjo, and Karawang. Kimberly-Clark Softex also then expanded the emission reporting scope to include plastic and paper waste emissions in plant Karawang.

In total, Kimberly-Clark Softex’s carbon footprint in year ending December 2019 was 253,029.7 tCO₂e, a decrease of 6.3% from 2018, while the carbon footprint intensity was 48.6 tCO₂e per million units of production, a decrease of 5.4% compared to 2018. This is attributed to a significant reduction in plastic use resulting from the material efficiency program, which involved modifying product designs to reduce the dimension of packaging, utilizing lower weight thinner type substitute materials.

Since 2017, Kimberly-Clark Softex has implemented various energy efficiency improvements in all plants, such as regulating the workloads of mill and vacuum AC motors and introducing programs to automatically switch electrical units to idle position when they are in standby mode and added inverters to the motors and modified the work cycles to consume less electricity when they are idle. As a result, in 2019, Kimberly-Clark Softex’s machinery consumed approximately 4.5% less electricity.

Kimberly-Clark Softex recognizes that climate change exacerbates risks of natural disasters affecting their business operations, including floods, droughts, storms, landslides and forest fires with direct impacts on our facilities and national distribution networks. As a globally-connected business, climate change can also impact the supply chain and sales in international markets. Therefore, Kimberly-Clark Softex has participated in an annual certification process to help drive effective implementation of management approaches to climate change, such as Planet Mark™.

Planet Mark™ is an internationally recognized and trusted sustainability certification body that monitors, measures and rewards continuous improvement in sustainability and carbon footprint reduction. Since 2016, Kimberly-Clark Softex have participated in an annual certification process to help drive effective implementation of the management approaches to climate change.

The Planet Mark™ partnered with the Eden Project, an educational charity and multi-award-winning international visitor destination and center for education in sustainability and innovation headquartered in Cornwall to support education on climate change. In addition, they also work in partnership with Cool Earth, an award-winning charity to protect the endangered rainforest.
